Gynecologic Examination and Pap Test
The Gynecologic Examination refers specifically to the examination of a woman’s reproductive system and is done as part of a woman’s yearly checkup.
The Pelvic Examination includes the following:
- Examination of the external genital area (clitoris, labia, urethral opening, opening of the vagina, perineum, and anus)
- Examination of the internal reproductive organs (vagina, cervix, uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes)
- Examination of the rectum (sometimes)
The Pap test (Papanicolaou smear) is an examination that is done to detect cervical cancer and precancerous conditions of the cervix. It generally includes cervical cytology and Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) screening.
Generally, pelvic examinations and Pap tests are recommended for all women, starting at age 21. A pelvic examination is not usually done before the age of 21 unless there is a problem, such as irregular periods, pelvic pain, an abnormal vaginal discharge, or if a young woman is sexually active.
Screening for Sexually Transmitted Infections
Sexually transmitted infections (STI’s) are a major public health problem worldwide. Complications of untreated STI’s include upper genital tract infections, infertility, cervical cancer, and enhanced transmission and acquisition of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
The STI’s that may be screened for include: Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Trichomonas, HPV, Mycoplasma, Herpes, Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B, Syphilis, and HIV.
Genetic Counseling and Testing
Does your family have a history of cancer?
Ask us about hereditary cancer risk assessment and testing.
We offer genetic testing for individuals at high risk for developing hereditary breast, ovarian, endometrial, colorectal, pancreatic, and many other cancers.
To find out if there is a pattern of cancer in your family, fill out the Family History Questionnaire during your annual visit and schedule a consultation.
